Who We Are

Hanah Elizabeth has grown up surrounded by the beautiful landscape’s of the three counties (Herefordshire, Worcester & Shropshire) in a little town which encompasses all three within just a few miles, Tenbury Wells. She still lives close by with her nature obsessed son Alfie, the beautiful Oscar the dog & their ducks where they work to create a self sustainable, outdoor & creativity orientated lifestyle on the beautiful Netherwood Estate.

The eldest daughter of artist Jim Bailey & Bernadette, a teacher, Hanah spent much of her childhood at creative workshops & learning as many new skills as possible. Her time as a teenager living with other families in the country helped inspire a love for country living. After studying at Hereford Sixth Form & Hereford Collage of Art, she digressed from her artistic practice for a few years, training as a chef & in horticulture but also kept a foot in the art world; teaching art classes, painting murals & writing & illustrating children’s books. She was a freelance discovery writer for the Candide gardening app writing articles which took all of her interests & passions for foraging, preserving, horticulture, garden design, crafts & well being to a wider audience.

A late diagnosis of autism at the age of 25 & many years of mental health struggles has given Hanah a clear understanding of how nature & creativity can come together to improve our well being & enhance our lifestyles. In 2019, after battling with a bout of depression, Hanah took the plunge to improve her lifestyle for her & her son, becoming a full time mural artist & beginning the process of setting up a business to help others who struggle with similar problems by incorporating her extensive knowledge & skills with her many years of teaching experience.

During the 2020 pandemic, future mural work came to a halt as businesses & clients were now struggling & the world was sent spiralling into the unknown. It was at this time that Hanah set up the “Paint The World” project, an art based community charity which allows for schools, hospitals & communities to benefit from art with massive discounts on work. She worked tirelessly for over a year to complete a massive 10 murals for Primary Schools, created community art work dedicated to war veterans & has given free art materials & places at workshops for those suffering with mental health or financial hardships.

What is the Painted Fern Studio?

Hanah began working on The Painted Fern Studios 3 years ago unifying a love of nature & crafting beautiful products with their ethos of doing so in a sustainable, creative & intellectual based manner. Having a unique perspective on the connectivity of the world around her, Hanah’s artistic practices began to encompass her interests in botany, symbolism & folklore & her teaching techniques have been built upon a scientific basis expanding into neuro-aesthetics, anthropology, horticulture & even the chemistry involved in artist practices, giving her students an in depth & remarkable objectivity to the world around them. By delving into traditional & even prehistoric crafts, she’s found a way to utilise the natural resources abundant to all freely & create an eco friendly approach to contemporary crafts & artistic practice.
